What to expect in kindergarten

Schools choose their own lists, so use your child's if you have one: the list maker turns it into the full game. If you don't, the Dolch primer list is a common choice for kindergarten, usually after the pre-primer words.

Aim for a few new words at a time. Keep them in play until your child reads them without sounding out, then add more. The assessment checklist makes it easy to see which words to work on.

Kindergarten sight word questions

How many sight words should a kindergartner know?

There's no single number: schools and states set different goals. Ask your child's teacher what they expect, and focus on reading each word quickly and confidently.

What if my child is just starting?

Begin with the pre-primer list. The 40 words there are the first ones the game teaches.

Is Wordburrow really free?

Yes. The whole game plays free in your browser, with no signup, no ads and no time limit. An iPhone app is in the works, and the web game stays free.

An app is on the way

We're building a Wordburrow app for iPhone. The plan is everything you can play here, plus offline play and a parent view of the words that have stuck. It isn't out yet. The whole game is free here in the meantime.
